Senior Estimator/Civil Engineer

Job Description

Position: Senior Estimator/Civil Engineer
Location: Hutchinson, MN

Industry: Civil-Construction
Job Type: Full-Time Position
Salary Range: $100,000 – $150,000
Years of Experience: 4 year degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineer Preferred
    plus 5 years experience in Earthwork or related construction field.
Must have estimating experience with heavy civil project

The estimator is responsible for developing cost estimates for heavy civil and private work as required by owners documents. This position would primarily be office-based, with some regional travel.  Overnight travel will be limited.

Essential Functions:

  • Coordinates total estimating effort relevant to project assigned.
  • Reviews construction documents including proposal specifications and drawings.
  • Attends pre-bid meetings to fully understand scope of work to bid.
  • Inputs take-off quantities into estimating software.
  • Search and analyze most cost effective means and methods of construction.
  • Finds and reviews appropriate RFP’s
  • Prepares job billing and pay applications
  • Obtains pricing for materials.
  • Prepares bids by coordinating with and selecting vendors and subcontractors to determine cost effectiveness of projects to bid.
  • Prepares budget estimates, progress reports and cost tracking reports
  • Reads and understands specifications and develop construction project plan
  • Prepares cost analysis in computer by itemizing material, labor, equipment, subcontractor and overhead costs incurred in the installation of items.
  • Where predetermined standard(s) are not available, makes an estimate and qualifications.
  • Follow awarded contracts as assigned: may include estimating extra work items, change orders or credits.
  • Informs the immediate supervisor (management team) of any observed inaccuracies or omissions in bid document.
  • Develops and maintains resource information on products, vendors, subcontractors, government requirements, etc.
  • Advises all necessary parties of major changes to scope of work.
  • Once project completes debriefing with estimating, project managers, senior management, and owners to discuss the outcome.
  • Maintain backup files and working documents for all estimated figures including current, accurate information and costs from suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Attends departmental meetings as required.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Four year degree program in construction management
  • Civil engineering preferred
  • 3 to 5 yrs related experience (e.g., construction, DOT, civil engineering)
  • Experience with Department of Transportation preferred.
  • Experience putting together technical bids
  • Ability to work under pressure and coordinate numerous activities and groups of people who need to cooperate to achieve projects goals and owner expectations.
  • Strong technical skills, preferring those experienced with Excel, MS Word, Project and Outlook.
  • Task and detailed orientated.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability to work well in a team environment
  • Working knowledge and proficiency in application of project and staff management principles.
  • Proven problem solving ability.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects
  • Working knowledge HCSS Heavy Bid and Heavy Job
  • Working knowledge of P6
  • Working knowledge of AGTEK software
  • Familiar with Heavy Construction Equipment
  • Piling and concrete experience a plus
  • Collaboration Skills a must
